If there was a science fiction and western themed amusement park, it would be Cathode Raytube Land (CRT).

What is Cathode Raytube Land?

Cathode Raytube Land is the ultimate interactive board game, created and constructed by Aaron Johnson in 1994. It is unlike any board game you have experienced before. All that is required to play is your imagination.

The game board is approximately three feet wide and four feet long. A lava lamp stands in the center of the board to provide extra light, since much of the game is played in the dark. A black light is mounted overhead. The board is constructed of high quality materials, amounting to a current cost of roughly two thousand dollars. Three dimensional features and fluorescent paints and inks result in a unique "other-world" appearance. The board is commonly called THE PARK, since Cathode Raytube Land represents a science fiction-themed amusement park.

You enter the park, engaging in a "scavenger hunt." The object of the game is to be the first to exit the park with a number of SOUVENIRS. There are over two thousand playing spaces on the board. Getting around can take time. TRANSPORTER PADS speed up the process, along with a ship called the JUPITER 2, both of which can fly or transport you across great distances to different areas of the park. Within the park are a variety of RIDES. Four three-dimensional rides and four ZONE rides offer a variety of adventures. It is in these rides, or out in the farthest reaches of the park, referred to as the FRINGE, that you find your souvenirs.

The rides and SOUVENIRS cost money. You are issued CREDITS upon your arrival to cover these expenses. Transporter uses and Jupiter 2 flights also cost credits, along with a host of other fees. You may go into debt while in the park, but all debts must be settled before you can exit to win the game. ATM PASSES are acquired during your visit, which can be turned in at any time at an ATM (AUTO-TELLER MACHINE) for additional credits.

In your search, you will encounter MONSTERS. To protect yourself from the monsters, and avoid losing your acquired passes and souvenirs, you'll need a RAYGUN. Once you have a raygun, you're invincible, in most cases.

The game has two phases. In LITE MODE, everything is friendly and predictable, and prices for rides and souvenirs are set. In DARK MODE, ride prices are discounted and souvenirs and rayguns, which normally cost 100 credits, are free. In DARK MODE, any type of trading or selling is permitted, offering another avenue of acquiring the desired souvenirs. Players landing on THIEF SPACES may steal one item from an opponent. As you may have figured, the game becomes real interesting in DARK MODE. Modes are changed by players landing on the appropriate spaces.

Trivia cards dealing with science fiction movies and television may allow you to get extra turns and passes. It is not necessary that one knows about the science fiction medium to play and enjoy the game. In fact, many who know nothing about science fiction routinely win. There are over 1000 trivia cards in the game. You'll be surprised by how much you DO know!

Within the ZONE RIDES are ADVENTURES. These ADVENTURES are the heart of what makes Cathode Raytube Land special, and this is where the motto "Expect the Unexpected" applies. Landing on these spaces may result in a player acquiring large amounts of credits and passes, or souvenirs. The player may be assigned a task to perform. A catastrophe may result, affecting the player and/or their opponents. These adventures are funny and exciting, and there are over 350 different adventures per version. In all versions, over 2900 adventures await your exploration. You could play CRT for the next ten years and not experience it all, and it never plays the same, nor will the board ever be the same each time you play. Actually, the board changes while you play!

There are 9 versions of the game, each featuring its own set of zones or character. The ZONES are based after classic TV shows.
The SERIES I zones include LOST IN SPACE, STAR TREK, THE INVADERS, THE OUTER LIMITS, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE TIME TUNNEL, VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and LAND OF THE GIANTS.
SERIES II, somewhat more challenging, includes STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, STAR TREK: VOYAGER, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE, THE PRISONER, BABYLON 5, THE WILD WILD WEST, DOCTOR WHO and THE X FILES.
The difficult SERIES III zones include BATMAN, INVASION, MAD MAX, JAMES BOND 007, JURASSIC PARK, CLASSIC MONSTERS, STAR WARS and ALIEN.
SERIES 4 premiered in 1998. Set in outer space, you buy and use a space ship to gather your souvenirs. A 2008 redesign features two new zones. Zones are based after films and TV episodes such as BABYLON 5, STAR TREK, WING COMMANDER, GALAXY QUEST, DUNE, DARK CITY and STARSHIP TROOPERS.  This is CRT's most unpredictable version.
SERIES WEST developed in 1999, is CRT in the old west. Instead of rayguns, it's pistols and rifles.  Players get around with horses, stagecoaches and trains.  Wild animals and outlaws are the bad guys, and trivia focuses on American and Colorado history and western films and television.  A popular attraction for players is the gunfights, providing another avenue for acquiring souvenirs.  How quick a draw are you?  This version has become very popular with CRT's older baby-boomer crowd.
SERIES 6: FANTASY & HORROR was developed to respond to demand for a "park expansion" and to commemorate CRT's monumental 15th season. Heated anticipation from the players made this version an instant hit before it was out of the gate! Series 6 is "Series West on steroids" and features three hundred adventure possibilities spanning a wide array of popular movies and television shows in the genre such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, various mythologies and classic horror and fantasy productions. Players get around with "portals" instead of transporters, there's a new line up of weapons and monsters and it all takes place in a unique environment.
THEME RIDES
Four theme rides, out of a total of sixteen, appear in each Series 1, 2 or 3 game. The rides are selected by the Park Host as appropriate to the group playing.
Veterans and experts may request rides prior to playing. Ride selection availability is determined by the attraction's position in the Park. Each ride is unique,
varies in difficulty and features two or more souvenir possibilities.

The Swamp
The first theme ride ever developed for the Park was redesigned prior to the 7th season, incorporating new features and an old friend, the Arena Robot, which pulls double duty in the Arena. This is the first ride to incorporate the Fringe route as part of the attraction.
Castle Mountain
The second theme ride developed for the Park, Castle Mountain was redesigned during the 2nd season and makes regular appearances in beginner games. Features include a drawbridge, canyon and Lover's Leap, which places a player somewhere else in the park.
Alien Planet
Redesigned during the 2nd season, Alien Planet dates back to the Park's beginning, and remains a challenge today. The Alien Cave of Wonders is an added feature that remains largely unexplored. A Jupiter 2 landing pad is included.
Crystal Kingdom
One of the Park's most challenging rides, Crystal Kingdom is loaded with money and obstacles. The Bottomless Pit, Phosphorus Pool and Crystal Tomb wait to capture unsuspecting explorers. A Jupiter 2 pad is available.
North Pole
A favorite, the North Pole is an homage to a locale where several noted sci-fi tales took place.  Monetry rewards are considerable, but watch out!  The icebergs fall away as you venture out across the icy wastes.  Don't get stranded...or worse!
Brain Bender
CRT's brain powered roller coaster was built during the 4th season to satisfy trivia buffs looking for a challenge.  The more you know, the faster you go!  The record for executing this ride is one turn.  If you're good at sci-fi trivia, be sure to request the Brain Bender.
Shadow Dance
Developed during the 9th season, this ride is a nail biter.  Pilot the Jupiter 2 in your quest for four souvenir possibilities through Shadow space, where the deadly Shadows (Babylon 5) reside.  After the roll of special dice, if the Shadows land on the space you occupy, you're dead.  The Jupiter 2 is required to execute this ride, but the nice thing is this ride's contents is they are not affected by adventures, so they're yours to claim if you can elde the shadows long enough!  The Jupiter 2 is also exclusively used by a player currently engaged in the ride.
Super Sleuth
If you like mysteries and solving questions with clues, you'll like Super Sleuth.  The reward is usually a couple of tokens from the Fringe in addition to two souvenir possibilities.  There is also no admission fee.
CRT Science Fiction Museum
This ride looks different every time it appears because the displays change constantly.  While in the ride, receive 10c for each correctly identified display.
Memory Lane
Stay as long as you like in Memory Lane.  You get five chances per turn to make matches.  Dark and lite modes, thieves, extra souvenir possibilities, ATMs and zonechanges await your discovery.  If y have a good memory, this ride's for you.
Arena
Stay CRT's always unpredictable ride features the always clumsy and cantankerous CRT robot which definitely has a mind of its own.  Dodging the robot in your quest for souvenirs, if you're stepped on, it's curtains!  Players love this old favorite for the thrills.  For unexpected excitement, the Arena can't be beat.
Barbarella's Kinky Kalamity
CRT's adult attraction is another favorite and always good for some laughs.  Definitely expect the unexpected!  The ride is known for its legendary Secret Sex Missions.  Available to players that have played 2 games of CRT and are 18 years of age or older.
War of the Robots
Developed during the 6th season, this ride features two famous robots, the B9 (Lost in Space) and Robby (Forbidden Planet).  A roll of the dice determines the robot that champions your cause.  The two battle.  If yours is the victor, you may choose one of the four souvenir possibilities.  Stay in the ride as long as you like.
CRT Cinemaquest
This ride is great for getting quick credits.  Guess the name of a TV show or movie for an indicated credit reward.  The harder the trivia, the more money you can make.  Two souvenir possibilities and an unlimited opportunity to build up your bank account is the appeal of this fast paced ride.
Montage Monte Carlo
This fun and easy ride brings a bit of the Las Vegas gambling spirit to CRT.  Added during the 14th season, players make bets on their trivia knowledge.  One of CRT's friendliest rides, it's hard to lose a bet in this particular casino, but it's possible if you're not thoughtful enough.
Tower of Babel
This newest ride is also the most difficult in the Park.  Scale the tower, solving phrase and quote problems along the way, or answer a sci-fi music trivia question or music trivia in general.  If you're knowledgeable enough, you might achieve "ascension" at the top of the Tower.  So far, no one knows what that is.  The trick is living long enough to make the climb to the top.  Incorrect responses means starting over at the bottom of the Tower.  It has become apparent that years will pass before players are successful in conquering this greatest of CRT challenges.
THE CRT ENVIRONMENT
In 2004 the Park moved to its new location and a special environment for the game was built.  CRT now has its own room, with lots of ambience to go around.  The light and BOSE sound systems are semi-automated, and movie posters, models, books and magazines all add to the CRT experience.  A convenient consession area is always stocked with food and refreshments.  A celestial portal that peers into the universe is poised above the Park.  It took a year to design and build the CRT environment.  The result is the unforgettable experience that is CRT.
THE BASICS
4 to 6 people can play, with 4 or 5 being the best number.  Games are suited to a group's collective ability (beginners, veterans & experts).  Average length is 3.5 hours.  Short games are 90 minutes, long games can exceed 5 hours.  In any event, reserve your entire evening or afternoon for a visit to the Park.  Rest is strongly recommended before your visit.  Ages 10 and up can play.  Due to CRT's ever growing popularity, RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.  Special events are encouraged and popular.  CRT Season runs November to the beginning of May.
A WORD FROM THE MASTER
Describing Cathode Raytube Land is a challenge, but hopefully this article removes some of the mystery. The CRT experience is a "you have to be there/see it to believe it" type of activity. You won't forget it and will likely want to experience it again and again. You're guaranteed to have a great time!

You'll be glad you chose Cathode Raytube Land (CRT) as one of your entertainment options. For sheer entertainment value (it's FREE), I am confident you'll agree CRT is hard to beat. Challenging and unpredictable, CRT is the ultimate game and more. You will share a roller coaster ride of emotions, adventures and challenges with a wonderful family of players in a unique atmosphere you'll find nowhere else. Add great music, great food and camaraderie at the unbeatable price, and "entertainment value" takes on a whole new meaning.

CRT has been going strong for 15 seasons. With Season 16, there are now 8 versions of CRT, plus a seasonal Christmas version, for a total of 9 different versions of the game, 16 theme rides and over 2640 adventures that await your exploration. I encourage you to introduce your friends and family to the Park. You'll make new friends as well by playing with folks you might not otherwise share a bond with. Players from around the world have played CRT! The growing CRT family is a group of the finest people I have ever known, and I am proud to claim each one as a friend and member.

In addition to this article, please check out the CRT DVD for a first hand look at what the CRT experience is all about, and get the word direct from CRT lovers as well.

Of all the music and other creations I have offered, CRT has been the most rewarding. Apparently I was destined, first as a musician and later as a game builder, to entertain. An entertainer's ultimate reward is the satisfaction of his audience, and CRT has delivered more immediate and sustained satisfaction to people than any previous creative effort. To deliver that much joy out of one's creation is rare, and I consider myself fortunate to be blessed with such an opportunity. I am glad that CRT brings smiles, joy, excitement and enthusiasm to so many. It's been a fantastic 15 years, and here's to many more!

Thanks for your support of Cathode Raytube Land.

Expect the Unexpected!

Cathode Raytube Land Creator and Host

SERIES 7: HEROES OF THE REALM was also created to commemorate CRT's 15th season in the desire to create the ultimate fast version of CRT. More of a fast paced strategic exercise, Series 7 has eight regions featuring Superman, Spider Man, X Men, The Matrix, Blade, Underworld, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. It's good versus evil on a hostile grid-like landscape, making Series 7 a difficult version to master. A new line up of bad guys, weapons and travelling options is also featured in this streamlined take on the CRT concept.   It will be some time before players master the complexities of Series 7.

CRT's Christmas version is new for the 16th season.  The action takes place in a Christmas village and four rides are available in keeping with a science fiction theme.  Special souvenirs and cards have been developed for this version, along with 40 wild and crazy Christmas adventures.  Get around on Santa's Sleigh, transporters, and defend yourself against various beasties and in-laws with a dose of good will instead of a raygun.  A Cathode Raytube Land Christmas is only available during November and December, so reserve this version early in the season!
SERIES 8: Silent Running is CRT's most ambitious and elaborate version yet.  The Master sorta "lied" when he said there would be no more versions of CRT.  Series 8 has long been in the planning, the result of a desire to fully realize the potential of a game that was actually developed BEFORE CRT.  Applying the CRT concept to that original game, Series 8 is an under water submarine tactical exercise, featuring CRT's largest gaming theater ever.  The playing area is 4.3 times the size of a normal CRT board due to 4 levels and drawer areas, exceeding over 4,100 seperate playing spaces.  Series 8 will likely be CRT's most challenging version to learn and master, due to a third dimension of moving possibilities and complex maneuvering options, mission orders and tactical planning with an assortment of playing cards.  This version is available to players that have played Series 1, 2 & 4.
