Northstars Make First Move:
The Minnesota Northstars say "Good-bye" to two great players and say "Hello" to two more. Thursday night saw General Manager David Biskup trade left wing Sylvain Turgeon and defensemen Jim Johnson to the Detroit Falcons for prospects Adam Deadmarsh (LW/RW) and Hall Gill (D). The two teams also exchanged draft picks, the 1996 MIN 2nd going to Detroit and the 1997 DET 1st coming to Minnesota. The Northstars now have 5 first round draft pick in the 1997 and 1998 draft years combined, both expected to be deep with talented players.
GM Biskup was very hesitant in trading away Turgeon and Johnson. Sylvain has been a great player and produced regularily on the score sheet. Johnson, one of the teams alternate Captains, brough a stay-at-home style of play and a fair amount a experience and leadership to the group.
"I hate trading away talent, I almost feel like its an insult to the players. However we think they will enjoy alot of success in Detroit. I feel better that I sent them to a contender...at least the are contenders now anyway" comment the GM in a press conference.
What did the team bring in and why did they feel it necessary to make this trade? Adam deadmarsh is a gritty, versitile player. He can play either position on the wing which allow the team to juggle lines. It is believed that with Turgeon gone, and Deadmarsh likely being moved to the right side, Mikeal Renberg will be moved back to the left side and fill in on the first or second line. His scoring touch will be welcomed with open arms. Hall Gill is, at a quick glance, the biggest player in the VHL. He will have to work on his skating and speed to make an impact in this league, but his size alone is something that will be hard to duplicate. Both players are expected to remain in Dallas to improve various aspects of their game in the farm system. Another key peice to the deal was the aquisition of the 1997 first round pick. The draft posistion is yet to be determined, but the prospect of drafting a pro-ready player is high.
With the alternate Captain spot opened it was announced that goaltender Mike Richter has been asked to wear the "A" on his sleeve.
"Its would be an honour! Alot of people don't realize how vocal us goalies can be, I think I can help lead this team." said Richter.
It will be interesting to see if this added responsibility will help kick-start his slow start to the season.
